Physical Thereapy

Combining the expertise of certified, trained and experienced personnel with physician leadership, advanced equipment and established treatment plans, Fishermen's Hospital Rehabilitation Services program is the catalyst by which patients return to their normal activities of living, working and playing. Through the provision of these services on an inpatient and an outpatient basis through its centers in Marathon and the Big Pine Key Medical Complex, the program offers a wide range of services including Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy.

The Rehabilitation Services Department offers inpatient treatment for those patients who need Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy while they are in the hospital as well as outpatient PT and OT in Marathon at mile marker 54 and in Big Pine Key at mile marker 29. The department is divided into two areas of treatment: Physical and Occupational. The Physical Therapy side works with orthopedic injuries, such as hip and knee replacements and ACL knee problems while helping patients with post-surgical injuries. In Physical Therapy, back and neck injuries can be taken care of, sport injuries can be attended to and with hands-on activities our staff can make sure a patient is back to fishing as soon as possible. The Occupational Therapy side specializes with rehabilitation of the upper extremity.

Fishermen's is the only rehabilitation center in the Keys that offers a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT), who has specialized training and expertise in rehab of the hand, wrist, elbow or shoulder. Because we use our hands and arms to do everything that we need to do throughout the day from brushing our teeth and getting dressed, to driving to work or reeling in that big fish, Occupational Therapy focuses on functional, everyday activities. OT's help people who have had injuries, surgeries or illnesses that affect their ability to use their hands. They treat a wide variety of patient conditions. OT's may see patients who have suffered from stroke, had rotator cuff surgery or fractured their wrist or arm.

At two convenient locations in Big Pine Key and Marathon, the wellnes programs are designed to fit the individual. "We always give one-on-one treatment to our patients," said Christy L. Minor MS, OTR/L, CHT, Director of Rehabilitation Services. "They receive our undivided attention.

Our goal is to help them get back to doing their normal activities as soon as possible" The staff features over 80 years of experience, primarily in outpatient orthopedics. Extensive equipment can be found at both locations, including: computerized strength analysis systems, treadmills, weights, recumbent steppers, arm bikes, ultrasound, electric stimulation, and traction. They also have state-of-the-art rehabilitation machines to shorten the recovery process like Fluidotherapy.

To stimulate a faster recovery, patients may receive a therapeutic whirlpool treatment that soothes the injured area immediately upon contact. Just like other departments at Fishermen's Hospital, patients are not just a number, they are our friends and neghbors who deserve personalized care and attention.
