High Definition Breast Imaging MRI Technology Now Available

Fishermen’s Hospital has one of the most advanced diagnostic imaging tools for helping physicians reach confident diagnoses and provide the best patient care. The Signa HDx 1.5T MRI system from GE Healthcare delivers highly detailed images of the human body with increased speed, better resolution and unique applications. According to Hugo Diaz, Radiology Director, this advanced technology provides shorter exams and greater comfort for patients while providing higher diagnostic confidence for doctors.

One outstanding feature of the Signa HDx 1.5T MR system is the ability to do dual breast scanning.  Breast MRI uses magnetic resonance imaging to look specifically at the breast. It is a noninvasive procedure that doctors use to determine what the inside of the breast looks like without having to do surgery. In the time it normally takes to image just one breast, doctors can now image both breasts simultaneously. Each exam produces hundreds of images of the breast, cross-sectional in all three directions (side-to-side, top-to-bottom, front-to-back).

“Some patients can present special challenges when undergoing MRI testing,” said Hugo. “Now, even those who are the most difficult to examine with conventional MRI approaches can be easily imaged and diagnosed.”

No radioactivity is involved with MRI.  Breast MRI is an evolving technology and should not replace standard screening and diagnostic procedures (clinical and self- exams, mammogram, fine needle aspiration or biopsy).

MR exams are used when people are ill or injured or when a physician suspects a medical problem that is not easily detectable from a conventional physical examination. The GE Signa HDx 1.5T MR system noninvasively assists physicians in the diagnosis of a variety of anatomical areas, such as the head, abdomen, chest and breast, including detailed imaging of the vascular system and major organs.
